What is the mold?
The mold is a structurally complex device for the formation of typical types of injection molding production. The product is formed by two types of elements – working and structural details.
Working equipment comes into contact with the material to be poured into the form, and the structural details are not in contact with the raw materials (their main task is to ensure the functionality of the mechanisms, to fix the device elements in a certain position).
The working range includes:
- matrix (determine the appearance of the product);
- punches (moving part responsible for the parameters of the internal structure)
- mold space (cavity inside the mold);
- connector line (plane at the interface between the matrix and the punch).
Structural elements include locking parts, ejectors, support rails, guide columns, mold handles, coolant supply system (air), thermostats, springs, bushings and other parts responsible for the operation of the technical system.

Classification criteria of molds
According to the method of manufacture there are molds of direct and injection molding. The first group of products is intended for limited production of stamped products with simple form, and injection molding models are used in large-scale production where large batches of billets are made. The material is filled using a separate device – the upper or lower loading chamber.
As the operation of the mold are stationary and removable. Mobile mechanisms are periodically removed from the plates of injection molding machines for unloading finished products. Stationary devices are secured immovably (this group has become more common than removable models). The process of pouring material and obtaining of billets is carried out directly on the production line.
In addition, molds are classified according to production capacity. There are models for large-scale or small-scale production. Devices for mass production are made from high-strength metal alloys that can withstand high pressure and temperature. Models designed for the production of small batches, created from lighter and cheaper materials: plastic, polyurethane, acrylic and other types of structural compositions. Separate lines of molds are designed for the manufacture of glass, plastic, silicone, plastic products.
How to create molds?
There are several steps for manufacturing of each new mold:
- development of a 3D model based on software platforms;
- working out of shape, size, color of existing products;
- layout process;
- adjustment of model parameters;
- trial release (testing);
- structural modification (if necessary)
